For 2011:
Resolutions are sketchy things at best. There are concrete ways that I want to get better in the coming year, of course, but the most notable events of 2010 wouldn’t have been on a list, unless that list was completely vague and useless. Still, concrete ways to improve exist, and they’re worth listing:
Lose 45 lbs.
Learn to play more than three chords on one of the stringed...
Taking Stock 2010: Part 3--A year in quotes:
January: “I want my life, from here on out, to be something awesome.”
February: “I have been called abrasive, intimidating, and stiff, but it you want something sexy, it’s thoughtful, versatile, and wicked.”
March: “Dear Masons, The reason I want to join the mason is because it’s an all mens gang. An they probably can turn me into a fully grown man.”

Taking stock 2010: Part Two--The Education Section
As I mentioned in Part One, for the first half of the year I was a high-school English teacher, a job I was qualified for in only the most liberal use of the word “qualified.”
In order to teach (your first year) in Memphis City Schools, you need two things: a college degree, and somewhere around twenty hours of coursework in the subject you’re supposed to be teaching. When I...
Taking stock of 2010, Part One.
On January 1, 2010, I was living in the suburbs of Memphis in a house that was far too large for me, with four cats, teaching high school English at what was arguably the worst school in Memphis City Schools, after having been unceremoniously laid off from my engineering job. The comparative incomes of a school teacher vs. an engineer had dwindled my savings to the point where I would soon be...
Christmas isn't Christmas without a sappy story to...
I got Grandma, who is on the far side of 80, a digital photo frame for Christmas, and asked the family to send in photos. They happily obliged, and over the past week I’ve been sorting them out and putting them all on the memory card, wishing I had more of everybody, especially grandpa, my parents, and various great-aunts and uncles who’ve passed away over the years (Grandma was one of...
2010: The Map →
As is the new tradition, I’ve made a map of everywhere I’ve been in 2010.
If you’re new to this, here’s 2009, and my childhood. I created one for 2000-2009, but it appears that it’s only got places in China on it, so there’s work to be done.
Oh, hey—it’s Christmas in all time zones east of here. Merry Christmas, Easterners!

Apparently Nashville has some kinda theatre awards nominated and voted on by the general public, and I figured that my amazing performancce in Jekyll & Hyde would get some sort of nod—after all, out of the hundreds of folks who saw it, or were involved in it, only a few would have to say they liked it in the nomination ballot for me to get in, right?
I figured wrong.
Every other aspect...
Is there nothing that can possibly go right these...
Last night I got back to my apartment to find a note on the door saying that a Comcast rep had come by to “collect my equipment.” I called the number and left a message to the effect that to the best of my knowledge I hadn’t cancelled my service, and still wanted to hang on to my equipment.
Today I logged in to check my account balance and discovered that my last payment...

That said - we *ARE* having a Tumblr meet-up March 18-20, 2011! T-Shirts will be designed soon. Location will be posted soon. Bar where we will all be drinking will be posted soon.
I’m thinking this might be a thing worth doing.
A conversation with the grandchildren I'll likely...
“Back in my day, if we wanted music, we had to tape a penny to a card that we’d attached stickers to, to indicate our preference for fifteen albums that we liked, then put the card in the mail. After those albums showed up, approximately once a month, a card would arrive in the mail where the company would select an album for you to buy, and you would have to return the card if you...
You know, this shouldn't be this complicated.
I shipped off my laptop to be repaired for a bad video card on October 27. As of this afternoon, they still haven’t managed to get a functioning motherboard installed into it.
I think it’s cursed.
