Last night a Derecho ripped through Memphis with enough power (via straight-line winds) to snap trees off. Needless to say, there are probably still tens of thousands of people without power, including yours truly. The last time we had this occur (an event coloquially referred to as “Hurricane Elvis”) 300,000 folks were without power—many for over a week. Power company estimates put the those impacted by this storm at about a third of that number.
The power company currently gives themselves forty more minutes to restore power, based on the last call I made—I don’t think they’re gonna make their self-imposed deadline, however, so I’ve resigned myself to several dark, hot, lonely nights. I’ve replaced the ice chest that doesn’t seem to be around here anymore (thanks, honey), moved everything that would fit from the freezer into it, and thrown a bunch away. I’ll probably lose the contents of another freezer—although I might donate some to various friends who still have power.
One bright spot, however, is that one of the neighbors has both a generator and unlocked wifi, which is how I’m getting this post out without resorting to taking my laptop to a bar. Although, truth be told, I probably ought to be taking my laptop to a bar, just for the multitasking potential (drinking and surfing the internet is multitasking, right?)
